What Are 5 Tips for Better Indoor Air Quality?

When outdoor air quality fluctuates due to seasonal allergens, pollution, or extreme temperatures, it’s especially important to ensure the air inside your home remains clean and healthy. Poor indoor air quality can contribute to allergies, asthma, and other respiratory issues. Fortunately, there are effective ways to improve the air you breathe indoors. Here are five expert-recommended tips to enhance your home’s indoor air quality and protect your family’s well-being.

1. Reduce Indoor Pollutant Sources

The first step toward cleaner indoor air is identifying and eliminating sources of pollution. Common indoor pollutants include radon, tobacco smoke, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) found in household cleaners, paints, synthetic furniture, and even air fresheners. To reduce exposure:

  • Test your home for radon, especially if you live in an area where it’s prevalent.

  • Prohibit smoking indoors.

  • Choose non-toxic, low-VOC products whenever possible.

  • Opt for solid wood furniture instead of particle board or MDF, which may emit formaldehyde.

Even small changes in your product choices can have a long-term positive impact on indoor air quality.

2. Improve Ventilation

Proper ventilation helps flush out indoor contaminants and bring in fresh air. Whenever weather permits, open windows and doors to encourage airflow. During times when outdoor air is less than ideal—such as in winter or during high pollen seasons—consider using mechanical ventilation systems like energy or heat recovery ventilators (ERVs or HRVs). These systems exchange stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air while maintaining indoor temperature and energy efficiency.

Also, be sure to clean or replace HVAC filters regularly to prevent dust and pollutants from circulating through your home.

3. Control Humidity Levels

Excess moisture in the home can lead to mold, mildew, and dust mites—all of which worsen air quality and respiratory health. Maintain indoor humidity levels between 30% and 50% to discourage mold growth and allergen proliferation.

In humid months, especially during late spring and summer, use a dehumidifier to manage moisture levels. Also, install exhaust fans in bathrooms and kitchens, or run them during and after use, to help remove excess humidity and airborne contaminants.

4. Use Air Purifiers Effectively

Air purifiers can enhance indoor air quality, particularly in spaces where natural ventilation is limited. Choose models equipped with HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Air) filters, which can capture at least 99.97% of particles as small as 0.3 microns—effectively removing allergens, dust, pet dander, and some bacteria.

Keep in mind, though, that air purifiers are a supplemental solution. They work best when used alongside other measures, such as reducing pollutant sources and maintaining clean HVAC systems.

5. Clean Regularly to Minimize Allergens

Routine cleaning is essential for reducing allergens like dust, pollen, and pet dander. Establish a cleaning schedule that includes:

  • Vacuuming with a HEPA-filter vacuum at least once a week.

  • Washing bedding and curtains in hot water.

  • Wiping down surfaces to remove accumulated dust.

  • Grooming pets frequently to minimize shedding and dander.

Pay particular attention during allergy seasons, such as spring and fall, when pollen levels are high and can easily be tracked indoors.
